Walking
There are many marked routes in the area and within
the Natural Park of Sierra María-Los Velez. There is also the possibility of exploring the protected areas of the
Natural Park ideal for anyone interested in bird watching or nature by pre-arrangement with a guide.
Bird watching.
The Natural park of Sierra Maria-Los Velez has the largest selection of bird species per square kilometre in Andalucía, including 17 species of bird of prey. There are 100 bird species in the park which was declared a special protection zone in 2002. Some of the birds that can be seen in the park are: Golden Eagle, Booted Eagle, Goshawk, Eagle Owl, Sparrow Hawk, Peregrine Falcon, and Griffon Vulture.
Mountain Climbing:
In Maria. Scale the rock faces of the mountains of Sierra María-Los Vélez Natural Park.
Mountain Biking:
Los Velez Area. Suitable for both children and adults.
Caving:
Cueva de la Gitana (Gypsy Cave) in Maria.
4 X 4 Routes:
Take one of two trips into the Natural Park.
This activity can be combined with caving or trekking. Venture into the Natural Park and enjoy the scenery, fauna and flora. Suitable for children.
Quad Biking:
Los Velez Area and further afiled. Ranging from two hour trips to full day or even a weeks package.
Paragliding:
Tandem flights starting from the Saliente Monastery. Get a birds eye view of the area.
Painting:
The local scenery is breathtaking and offers painters endless scenes for painting. During the spring the almond blossoms and wild flowers adorn the countryside. In the autumn, following the almond harvest and the ploughing of the land, the varying colours of the soil offer inspiration to many artists.

Due to its geographical location the area of Los Velez is a great base from which to enjoy many activities both within the area and in the regions of Almería, Granada and Murcia.
Sea Kayaking:
In the Natural Park of Cabo de Cope in the Murcia region. Opportunity to explore hidden coves only accessible by sea.
Canoeing:
On the beautiful Negratin Reservoir, Baza, Granada. Surrounded by stunning scenery.
Canoning:
Enjoy this exhilarating sport down the Río Verde in Almuñecar, Granada.
Skiing:
The ski resort of Sierra Nevada in Granada is 1.5 hours drive away and offers skiing to suit all abilities.
Karst en Yesos de Sorbas:
The Caaves of Sorbas are a protected site. Cave trips available for all ages and abilities.
Vera Water Park:
A fun day out for all the family. Flume rides and wave pool.
Mini Hollywood:
Now Oasys Theme Park , built around old Spaghetti Western film set, the location for 100’s of films including Sergio Leones ‘Dollar’ trilogy starring Clint Eastwood. The park also includes a zoo with more than 150 species of animals from around the world, a swimming pool, café, picnic area and shows including a shoot out and can-can girls.
Lorca Castle:
Forteleza del Sol – Historical Castle dating back to Moorish times. A fun and educational day out for all the family.
Tera Natura:
Murcia - Zoo and water park. Ideal for a family day out.
